Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive and radiation-free technology, which can be used to accurately assess the severity of diseases in patient having coronary artery disease, heart failure or congenital heart disease. It provides detailed information about how these diseases affect the heart/arterial structure and function. There were different cardiac MRI modalities such as anatomical testing, cardiac perfusion testing, viability assessment and evaluation of great vessels connected to the heart.

The pharmacological stress MCG serves the same purpose as exercise MCG for elderly or frail patients who cannot exercise adequately. The patients will receive intravenous drugs (dobutamine) to increase their blood pressures and heart rates and the examination process would be closely monitored by a cardiologist. Dobutamine is a short-acing drug which will not be retained in the body for a long time. Once the infusion of the durg is stopped, patients’ symptoms will disappear.

Exercise Magentocardiography (MCG) is a safe, fast and non-invasive technique for assessment of various heart diseases, especially for the early detection of coronary heart disease. MCG can detect the signal changes of the local magnetic field generated by patient’s own cardiac activity during exercise.

Due to the weakness of human cardiac magnetic signals, the patient is required to cycling exercise in a magnetically shielded room, and any subtle changes of magnetic field signals will be recorded optimally with a dedicated multi-channel magnetic detector, the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID).

Note:

1. If you use an inhaler to help breathing, please bring it along.

2. Beta-blockers (slowing down the heart rate) should be withheld for 24 hours before the test.

3. Don’t eat or drink caffeinated foods and berverages for 24 hours before the test.

4. Fast for 4 hours at least before pharmacological stress MCG. This can reduce the side effects of vomiting induced by dobutamine.

5. Please come with relatives or friends

MCG Features

1. Fast: only 10-15 minute testing time

2. Accuracy: up to 90%

3. Safe: non-invasive, no need to insert the catheter and no radiation

4. Tolerant: suitable for those who are required to monitor the cardiac function repeatedly

Who are suitable for MCG

Patients at risk of developing “coronary heart disease” – having symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath – no symptoms but have at least one risk factor for the disease, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, family history and stressful lifestyle

Patients with established coronarary artery disease to monitor disease progress after receiving treatments such as: – long-term medication therapy – receiving coronary angioplasty and stent implantation – receiving coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
