Introduction

Echocardiography Services

Centre Medical offers a full range of advanced echocardiography services to assess heart structure, function, and blood flow. These non-invasive or minimally invasive tests support early diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions and guide timely clinical decision-making.

Echocardiography

The most common non-invasive ultrasound examination of the heart, performed externally through the chest wall.

  • What it assesses: Chamber size, valve motion, ventricular contraction, pericardial effusion, and congenital heart defects.
  • Technology: We use 4D echocardiography, which provides dynamic, real-time 3D imaging and color Doppler to visualize blood flow and heart movement.
  • Procedure: The patient lies flat while ultrasound gel is applied to the chest. The doctor scans the heart using a handheld probe. The process takes 10–20 minutes and is completely safe and painless.
  • Note: No fasting or hospitalization required. Image clarity may be affected in patients who are obese or have lung conditions such as emphysema.
Applicable People

Who Should Consider Echocardiography?

  • Individuals with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or fatigue
  • Those with suspected or confirmed valve disease, heart failure, or congenital heart conditions
  • Patients preparing for surgery or participating in cardiac rehabilitation
  • Anyone with cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes)
Advantages

Exercise Stress Echocardiography

A combined test that evaluates the heart's function under physical stress using both treadmill exercise and ultrasound imaging.

  1. Purpose: Detects myocardial ischemia, exercise-induced arrhythmias, and stress-related valve abnormalities. Commonly used for coronary artery disease risk assessment.
  2. Procedure:
  3.    1.Baseline resting echo is performed.
  4.    2.Patient performs graded exercise on a treadmill to reach target heart rate.
  5.    3.A second echo is performed immediately post-exercise to observe cardiac response.
  6. Who it's for: Individuals with chest pain, reduced exercise tolerance, or those who have experienced dizziness or syncope.
  7. Note: The test is monitored by trained medical staff. Though non-invasive, it carries a small risk (~1 in 2,500) of complications such as arrhythmia or acute cardiac events.

Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)

A high-resolution imaging technique where an ultrasound probe is inserted into the esophagus to obtain clearer views of posterior heart structures.

  1. Indications: Ideal for diagnosing valve disease, endocarditis, atrial thrombi, aortic dissection, or for pre-surgical assessments.
  2. Procedure:
  3.    1.Patient receives mild sedation and throat anesthesia.
  4.    2.The probe is inserted via the mouth into the esophagus for scanning (15–30 minutes).
  5.    3.Patient remains under observation until fully recovered.
  6. Benefits: Superior image clarity, especially for hard-to-visualize areas such as the left atrial appendage and posterior valves.
  7. Note: Not suitable for patients with swallowing difficulties or a history of esophageal surgery.

This test must be performed in a hospital setting. Our clinic will assist with referral and coordination.
